The Empties

The Empties

Tagline: Outside, they’re human. Inside, they’re empty.

Logline: After reports of violent attacks, a family fears that the stranger in their cabin suffers from a contagious disease that empties the mind.

Three Line Synopsis: Reports of a deadly epidemic appear on the news just as a family helps a confused stranger into their cabin. As the stranger deteriorates, the rational family members must fight off irrational suspicions that she will infect or turn on them. When the stranger’s husband shows up at their door looking for her, fear and paranoia spiral out of control leaving those still alive to question whether or not the infected are still human.

Kristen Renee Gorlitz and Mikos Zavros present an original horror script about an unusual virus outbreak in a rural setting. The central relationship between Joan and Blake is funny and realistic, which provides a solid foundation for the fast-moving plot. Of particular note within the plot, the Hauser situation was well-executed, both tragic at the beginning and darkly comic by the end. The mythology of the virus is thoughtful and creative. The reader especially enjoyed how the “zombies” retained elements of their humanity and were treated as real people rather than mindless rage monsters. The religious and scientific conspiracy theories to explain the strange events of the script are all explored in an interesting and refreshing way, successfully tapping into our modern fears of genetically modified organisms. The script is polished, free from any detectable formatting or grammatical errors.
